The Latest: Water pressure begins to return in metro Atlanta

DORAVILLE, Ga. — The Latest on a major water break in metro Atlanta (all times local):

1:45 p.m.

Authorities say water pressure is beginning to return to parts of a Georgia county after a major water main break shut down schools and businesses in a large part of metro Atlanta.

DeKalb County authorities said Wednesday afternoon that crews had isolated the break just northeast of Atlanta, and that water pressure was slowly being restored throughout the county.

The massive water main break sent water gushing across a major highway, and led to low water pressure for miles (kilometers) around. Low water supplies led to several businesses closing and prompted more than 100 schools to send more than 100,000 students home Wednesday.

Authorities say the break occurred in a transmission main in the Doraville area, but its effects were felt throughout the county’s water system.

The top official in one of Georgia’s largest counties says crews are working to fix a major water main break that’s shut down schools and businesses in metro Atlanta “as soon as humanly possible.”

DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said at a late-morning news briefing Wednesday that the hope is to resolve the situation within 24 hours.

The massive water main break sent water gushing across a major highway, and led to low water pressure for miles around. Low water supplies led to several businesses closing and prompted more than 100 schools to send more than 100,000 students home Wednesday morning.

One of metro Atlanta’s largest shopping centers, Perimeter Mall, announced it would be closed due to the low water pressure. And DeKalb Medical canceled elective surgeries scheduled for later Wednesday.

A massive water main break has sent water gushing into neighborhoods near Atlanta, flooding a major highway, closing businesses miles away and prompting more than 100 schools to close in one of Georgia’s largest counties.

DeKalb County said in a Wednesday morning statement that the break occurred in a 48-inch transmission main in the Doraville area, just northeast of Atlanta.

Officials say the county’s water plant is experiencing low pressure and they’re asking residents to conserve water.

WSB-TV reports water has been flowing into Buford Highway — a major artery through metro Atlanta — since before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. Pictures published by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution showed cars and buildings surrounded by water.

DeKalb County schools, Georgia’s third-largest school system, said all of its schools — more than 100 — were sending children home Wednesday.

Atlanta Housing Authority Names The Benoit Group And The Michaels Organization Development Partners For Upcoming Englewood Manor Development

ATLANTA, Feb. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Atlanta Housing Authority (AHA) announces The Benoit Group and The Michaels Organization as development partners for the Englewood Manor development. Looking to create an innovative and dynamic sense of place and belonging, AHA and development partners will transform neighborhoods by providing innovative, market-income housing in the Englewood district, located along the Atlanta BeltLine.

The Englewood Manor development will serve as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization and will be developed in two phases. The first phase of the development is a 36-acre property, located in southeast Atlanta near the Atlanta BeltLine, within the Chosewood Park neighborhood. The vision is to create a mixed-use development providing a variety of housing options with neighborhood serving amenities, such as grocery stores, retail options, as well as greenspace.

The 36 acres consist of two non-contiguous sites. The first is a 26-acre former public housing site located on the south side of Englewood Avenue and adjacent to the BeltLine’s Boulevard Crossing Park. The Benoit Group will develop 16 acres on the western portion of the site and The Michaels Organization will develop 10 acres on the eastern portion of the site. The second site is located on the north side of Englewood Avenue and adjacent to the BeltLine.

Atlanta Housing Market Among Best To Invest In For 2018: Forbes

ATLANTA, GA — The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta metro area is among the 20 best housing markets to invest in for 2018, according to Forbes. Forbes teamed up with Local Market Monitor to come up with the list of places where growth appears most sustainable.

The list of cities Forbes deems worth investing in for real estate "offer a rare combination of better than average job growth and some runway before homes become overpriced," the magazine says. The housing markets are not necessarily ones where prices will grow the most in the near future but rather are places where that growth appears most sustainable over the medium to long term, Forbes explains.

Local Markets CEO Ingo Winzer began with 330 markets, eliminating ones that were too small and then those that performed the worst on key metrics, Forbes explains in its methodology. Winzer then compressed the list down to 20 markets that scored the best across five measures: one-year job growth, three-year population growth (2014-17), one-year home price growth, affordability and Local Market’s own three-year home price forecast.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta metro area ranked seventh on the list. Here’s how the area stacked up among key metrics:

Atlanta hospital deploys mobile unit to handle flu cases

ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) — As the flu epidemic overwhelms Georgia, one Atlanta hospital has set up a mobile unit to handle flu patients.

News outlets report the specialized trailer outside Grady Memorial Hospital’s emergency room has space for 14 beds, which the chief of emergency medicine at Grady Health System, Hany Atallah, hopes will relieve the emergency room by at least 100 patients a day.

At least 25 Georgia residents have died of flu this season. Grady CEO John Haupert agreed to spend extra resources on care, which led to the hospital contracting the Carolinas MED-1 unit, a mobile hospital, from Carolinas HealthCare System. It’s the unit’s first time in Georgia.

Grady spokeswoman Denise Simpson says the mobile medical facility costs around $200,000, not including supplies, for the 30 days Grady has it.

Late last year, more than 238 cities across the United States and Canada entered the biggest corporate relocation sweepstakes in recent memory: the contest to win Amazon’s second North American headquarters. Known as HQ2, the project is massive, promising to create approximately 50,000 jobs (the average salary of which would be $100,000) for the city selected. Politicians and business leaders have promised the online retailer free land, billions of dollars in incentives, and infrastructure fixes; the DeKalb County city of Stonecrest has offered to make a mini-city and name Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos as mayor. Others, including Atlanta and the state of Georgia, have remained tight-lipped about their bid package.

People love debating which cities might land on Amazon’s shortlist and why their city—including Atlanta, which has been pegged as a potential location—deserves to win the contest. We love thinking about what the headquarters might look like. But all those employees will need somewhere to live. And the effect that 50,000 people—in addition to the companies that follow, along with the regular population growth—would have on Atlanta would be immense.

Does Atlanta need to require new apartment buildings to include affordable units? Should the city buy land now before a population boom begins? Or is the housing crunch caused more by supply and demand, and we simply need to build more?
